And don't forget the state the board was in before the containment thread, that does nothing to stop political thread spam. I don't even ban people over it, I just delete the thread and move on.
Sure, we could build around that and have a password for your own thread. But we were supposed to get new board software eventually, so adding features to this legacy board software would be a wasted effort. Same thing for whitelisting tripcodes, it would be nice to get around the touchy spam filters here, but we can't really do shit.

In the case where OP won't or can't delete distracting spam, the neglected thread would fill with off topic crap. If someone else tries to create a replacement thread there will be objections. A moderator might interfere, saying a thread already exists, or some users of the old thread might still be comfortable with the original thread.

In such cases involving multiple threads on the same topic (technically spam), it's within the scope of mod duties to step in and rectify the situation. This has happened before. For instance, there were two Nazi threads, so a mod stepped in and bump-locked one of them. "Crisis" defused.
